Civilization And Its Disconnects Lyrics

So, I’m sitting on the beach in my favorite spot
Hypnotized by the crashing waves lost in thought
People all around, I’m far from alone
But I might be the only one not glued to their phone
Sun’s shining bright, sand between the toes
But who gives a shit if no one on Instagram knows
Always gotta look good for the virtual crowd
Ashamed of who you are IRL but on IG you’re proud

Gotta filter this, maybe Photoshop that
Subtract the ugly scars, bad tatts, and every last ounce of fat
While you’re at it don’t forget to double the breast size
Quadruple the ass and maybe triple the thighs
Add some oversized bug eyes and you’re almost done
One more thing: a pair of bunny ears just for fun
People think you look like this everywhere you go
As long as they never meet you, they’ll never know

Disconnect to your heart’s content
Reality is becoming a non-event

So, I’m sitting on the train looking out the window
Mesmerized by the passing graffiti as we go
Several conversations happening as we ride
But not a single person is talking to who they’re beside
We stop at Comm Ave, a woman gets on the train
I point to my left. “This seat’s not taken,” I explain
She said something as she sat, what I couldn’t hear
I asked her to repeat, she turned pointing to her ear
The earbud made me realize that she’s on the phone
The woman shot me the evil eye so I left her alone
Being social is turning into a lost art
We’ve never been more connected or farther apart

Connect to your heart’s discontent
Reality is becoming a non-event

We text, TikTok, Snap and DM
Sacrificing REM every PM
Data by the megabyte, gigabyte, terabyte
Information overload keeping us up at night
2G, 3G, 4G, five
Without the net not sure I could survive or even want to be alive
Tirelessly tired, wirelessly wired
That dopamine gets fired, credit card required

Soon we’ll be online one-hundred percent
It’s not something we can prevent
Disconnect to your heart’s discontent
Reality has now become a non-event
