Invisible Illness Lyrics

Just because you cannot see it
Does not mean it isn’t real
Day after day it’s the same shit
Be glad you don’t know how I feel

Living with an invisible illness is like wearing around your neck a giant neon sign
That to you reads “I am sick” but to everyone else says “Thank you, but I am doing just fine”

I don’t expect you to get it
I just wish that you understood
I may, on the outside, look fit
But trust me: inside’s not all good

Living with an invisible illness feels like you’re always carrying around an extra load
It is like every single day having to play the game of life permanently set on hard mode

Those of us living with a chronic illness know that the illness itself is often problem number two
The biggest problem we face most of the time is dealing with people like you
You have no clue what we go through, you don’t even try to understand
You are so quick to judge, so quick to dismiss everything we say out of hand

Just because you can not see it
Does not mean it is not there
You do not have to believe it
Just like I do not have to care

Living with an invisible illness is like wearing around your neck a giant neon sign
That to you reads “I am sick” but to everyone else says “Thank you, but I am doing just fine”
Living with an invisible illness feels like you’re always carrying around an extra load
It is like every single day having to play the game of life permanently set on hard mode

I can’t show you
Do you feel me?
I don’t need your validation or even recognition
My illness may be hidden but I’m limited edition
I’ve had about enough, I’m just about through
I’ll make both me AND my illness invisible to you
Your sickness we can all see just fine
You’ve got a half-empty closed mind and no spine
You know what? I’m done with you now, actually
From this moment forward you’re invisible to me
