Warmth surrounds my soul as I inhale deeply and hold
It only takes one more puff for reality to unfold
Shapes begin to lose form, forms begin to take shape
This ride is now moving, no way to escape
A gentle come-up like shrooms or cid? Nope, none of that
DMT takes you from zero to sixty-million in two seconds flat
The ego melts, the room dissolves ’till there’s nothing but empty space
Then I see a familiar face in this strange otherwise-empty place
It’s me – but it’s not. Friendly – or so I thought
Then it points at me and says, “Impostor! You’re caught!”
I feel guilty and ashamed as if I’d committed a heinous crime
My shame shoots me across the universe to every place at every time
Somehow I’m everywhere at once, both here and there
I get scared as I become aware I’m nothing more than software
Day becomes night, the digital universe suddenly turns black and white
Then a giant wave crashes into me made up of a thousand colors of light
I’m swimming in an infinite sea of lovely level 8 geometry
Overwhelmed at the same time by both its beauty and complexity
Everything I’ve ever questioned starts making perfect sense
It’s intense realizing there’s no such thing as past OR future tense
I fall from the sky as I join a trillion other drops of rain
Next thing I know I’m a drop of blood flowing through my own vein
As I’m pumped around my body I realize I’m not software, I’m a machine
“The entire world’s mechanical,” someone says. “Know what I mean?”
The scene changes, I’m standing in the middle of a long hall
Surrounded by nothing but levers, gears, and dials on every wall
I try to resist but can’t help myself: I grab a lever and pull
The floor melts and I fall into a giant glass of water that’s almost full
The glass shatters but I don’t even make a tiny splash
In a flash, it’s reduced to a bone-dry cloud of ash
I feel an ominous presence but through the ether it’s hard to see
Suddenly, clear as can be, I spot a metallic owl staring at me
Its fractal eyes pierce my soul yet I’ve never felt more whole
The owl hands me a key with one talon and with the other points to a keyhole
I don’t want to disappoint the owl so I promptly insert the key
Which unlocks the undeniable truth that the owl is me
Yet I’m not the owl, which just leaves me confused
The owl flaps its wings and laughs, clearly amused
I cross my own wings and say, “I’m glad you find this amusing.”
With a concerned look the owl replies, “Careful – you’re oozing.”
The entire essence of my being oozes between the cracks
Then resolidifies into a planet-sized ball of wax
Pleased with my new form, I bounce from one galaxy to the next
Until I have good enough service to send an interdimensional text
The owl manages to find me and insists we go back to the beginning
Its platinum eyes start thinning and the room starts spinning
Terror occupies every cell of my body cause I don’t know where the beginning is
The owl senses my fear and distracts me from it with a pop quiz
Two-dozen questions later I find myself back on familiar ground
I’m quite proud that I answered every one without making a sound
My friend throws her wings around me, like being wrapped in a warm towel
Then after the embrace flies away ’till I can no longer see the owl
As soon as she leaves, time goes back to flowing in only one direction
My own reflection startles me now that I don’t have the owl’s protection
But I exhale and smile cause it’s only the mirror in my room that I see
Coming down from the DMT, I ponder whether or not the owl is me
